What a month this has been. For the past 10 days I have been working in Mexico City for one of their billionaire's 50th birthday party. The party his wife thru for him at their home in the Chapultepec district was amazing (as I had a hand in it, I'll enjoy the after glow).
So today after the strike was finalized, another PA and I headed to the Historical District of the City. We tried to get into the Ashes and Snow exhibit but it was the final day of showing and there were at least 3000 people in line. We headed over to the Cathedral, the largest in the Western Hemisphere. While we tried to attend Mass it was too spanish as in language and too fast so we left. We went into the side temple where the statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe shrine is - it was more contemplative.
As we headed out, my friend John goes, look at that ceremony, that Aztec priest is driving any demons out of that lady. He saw me pause and wonder. He said, "Tom, do you want to do that?" And I replied, "I think I do." He took my glasses off, took my camera and pushed me in the line.
And there I stood in this plaza, people walking by, some stopping and watching, as this half dressed scrawny aztec priest did this ceremony around me with incense and herbs. While I wanted to keep my eyes closed, I couldn't. Watching the expression on his face, the intense look in his eyes, I guess I got caught up in it all and a peace came over me.
While exhausted from this last month of travels in Mexico, I'm sitting in my hotel room, looking out over what could pass for Central Park, looking at at a castle and just thinking of that Aztec priest and feeling quite contented.
Back to the USA tomorrow night.
